There are so many meditation techniques that promise dramatic improvements, how is TM different?
Dozens of meditation techniques claim to have the same effects as TM, but neither experience nor research could ever confirm this.
The difference between Transcendental Meditation and other meditation techniques is in the word “transcendental”, a technique that leads to the experience of transcending.
Since we started teaching TM 40 years ago we’ve seen dozens of other meditation techniques coming and going. Everybody claims that they can create the same positive effects as TM. Yet time and time again, it doesn’t seem to work anywhere near as well as promised. Guiding people properly to that experience of transcending requires a very specific formula of personal guidance and a very intense training.
But it is the experience of transcending that makes all the difference, and both personal experience and objective research confirm this.
For example a recent analysis of all the available high quality research on both TM and Mindfulness on the most severe form of PTSD (war veterans and refugees) showed that TM was on average 5 times as effective as Mindfulness
Likewise many other researches have compared the effectiveness of TM to other meditation techniques, (on anxiety, blood pressure, addictions, self-actualisation etc. ) but each and every time the result was the same: the true experience of transcending is so much more profound than ordinary relaxation that there’s no comparison.
